The purpose of this synthesis is to provide an updated matrix of geophysical techniques for each application, as well as to provide background and training resources for geophysical methods that have consistently yielded quantifiable value through improvements to design efficiencies and reductions in construction risks. The synthesis assesses changes in the state of practice since publication of NCHRP Synthesis 357 and includes downhole methods and developing technologies. The synthesis also helps identify available tools and how the agencies can overcome obstacles to use.

NCHRP Research Report 926 provides a succinct process for selecting intersection designs and operational treatments that provide safety benefits for pedestrians and bicyclists, and the most appropriate situation for their application. The report draws from and builds on the strengths of key countermeasures and safety resources, tying these together in a systematic process for transportation practitioners to use to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety at intersections.

The objective of this research was to measure the benefits of rural and small urban transit services in Minnesota. The study accomplished this by first identifying, describing, and classifying the potential benefits of transit. Second, a method was developed for measuring these benefits. Where possible, benefits were quantified in dollar values. Other benefits that could not be monetized were either quantified in another way or described qualitatively. The study included an analysis of societal benefits and economic impacts within local communities. Third, the developed method was applied to a series of six case studies across Greater Minnesota. Data were collected through onboard rider surveys for each of the six transit agencies. Total benefits and benefit-cost ratios were estimated for the six transit agencies—all showed benefits that exceeded costs—and results were generalized to Greater Minnesota. Finally, a spreadsheet tool was developed that can be used by any transit agency to calculate the benefits of its services. This research provides information to assess the benefits of public spending on transit, which gives decision makers the data needed to inform investment decisions.

As traffic demand increases, the use of alternative intersections, such as roundabouts, diverging diamond interchanges, J-turns, median U-turns, and continuous flow intersections, is becoming more prevalent within the United States. An alternative intersection is an intersection where traffic movement is re-routed from a traditional intersection form to remove major conflict points. This synthesis report documents the evaluation and selection processes within state departments of transportation for intersection projects. Information for this study was gathered through a literature review, a survey of state departments of transportation, and follow-up interviews with selected agencies. Six case examples provide additional information on alternative intersection design and selection practices.

This user guide provides guidance to road managers, planners and designers on achieving improved safety outcomes by applying consistent standards along a road corridor. Thirteen road stereotype tables were identified covering the road network from rural freeways to urban local access roads. For each road stereotype, a range of cross-sections was developed with appropriate attributes. Each cross-section was assessed for crash risk using the International Road Assessment Program (iRAP) and the Australian National Risk Assessment Model (ANRAM). The tables provide guidance on the expected safety performance, or crash risk, of appropriate cross-section options for each stereotype. Table users should note that the range of attribute dimensions in the assessment was very limited, so assessment results should be considered as an indication of the safety benefits for the nominated attributes. This information can be used to develop safety improvement plans on a network/corridor, to achieve overall reductions in crash risk along the network. Network/corridor plans can then be used to inform project scoping decisions.

There is an increasing concern about the need to improve public transit operations in response to the rapid urban growth, transportation trends and social changes in cities. To assist the transit planners responsible for vehicle operations and planning, this report summarizes the decision-making process involving the selection of the most appropriate design and technology for public transit operations. Based on the findings and observations from a review of the relevant literature and the information gathered from practical challenges from real world deployment of emerging technologies, this compendium provides a broad overview for public transit design to facilitate the planning process by transit authorities at strategic, tactical, and operational levels. Building upon the knowledge gained from state-of-the-art-methods for fixed and demand responsive systems, this work contributes to a better understanding of the approaches needed to address challenges encountered in the successful implementation of public transit operations, particularly in regard to more flexible, real-time operations like microtransit.
